يُعتقد أن الأرقام الرومانية جاءت من إشارات اليد وعلامات العدّ. الخط I يمثل إصبعاً واحداً، وV يمثل الفجوة بين الإبهام والأصابع للرقم خمسة، وX يمثل اليدين المتقاطعتين للرقم عشرة. الحروف L وC وD وM جاءت من تعديلات على حروف يونانية مثل خي وثيتا وفاي لتمثيل 50 و100 و500 و1,000. مع مرور الوقت، تحولت هذه العلامات إلى الحروف اللاتينية المعروفة اليوم. لا يوجد رقم 0 في الأبجدية الرومانية، إذ لم يتطور مفهوم الرقم 0 بالكامل إلا بعد أن اخترعته الهند حوالي 600 م / 10600 HE.
