Roma rakamlarının el işaretleri ve sayım çizgilerinden geldiği düşünülmektedir. L, C, D ve M harfleri, 50, 100, 500 ve 1.000'i temsil etmek için chi, theta ve phi gibi Yunan harflerinin değiştirilmesinden gelir. Zamanla bu işaretler bugün bilinen Latin harflerine dönüştü.
