Man nimmt an, dass römische Zahlen von Handzeichen und Strichmarkierungen stammen. Der Strich I stellt einen Finger dar, das V den Abstand zwischen Daumen und Fingern für fünf, und das X gekreuzte Hände für zehn. Die Buchstaben L, C, D und M stammen von Abwandlungen griechischer Buchstaben wie Chi, Theta und Phi für 50, 100, 500 und 1.000. Im Laufe der Zeit verwandelten sich diese Zeichen in die heute bekannten lateinischen Buchstaben. Es gibt keine 0 im römischen Alphabet, da das Konzept der Zahl 0 sich erst vollständig entwickelte, nachdem Indien sie um 600 n. Chr. / 10600 HE erfunden hatte.
