Men denkt dat Romeinse cijfers afkomstig zijn van handgebaren en turftekens. De streep I stelt een vinger voor, de V de opening tussen duim en vingers voor vijf, en de X gekruiste handen voor tien. De letters L, C, D en M komen van aanpassingen van Griekse letters zoals chi, theta en phi om 50, 100, 500 en 1.000 weer te geven. In de loop der tijd veranderden deze tekens in de Latijnse letters die we vandaag herkennen. Er is geen 0 in het Romeinse alfabet, omdat het concept van het getal 0 zich pas volledig ontwikkelde nadat India het rond 600 n.Chr. / 10600 HE had uitgevonden.
