De letters L, C, D en M komen van aanpassingen van Griekse letters zoals chi, theta en phi om 50, 100, 500 en 1.000 weer te geven. Er is geen 0 in het Romeinse alfabet, omdat het concept van het getal 0 zich pas volledig ontwikkelde nadat India het rond 600 n.Chr. / 10600 HE had uitgevonden.
